Torchlight (PC)

Product Description

The adventure is set in the mining settlement of Torchlight, a boomtown founded on the discovery of rich veins of Ember - a rare and mysterious ore with the power to enchant or corrupt all that it contacts. This corruptive power may have dire consequences however, and players set out into the nearby mountains and depths below to discover the full extent of Ember’s influence on the civilizations that have come before.

  • Randomization - Our level layouts are randomly created, so each adventure is unique
  • Monsters, treasures, puzzles, and items are also different each time you embark on an adventure
  • Easy, approachable interface - Torchlight is designed to be easy to play right from the beginning
  • The intuitive interface gives players easy access to a rich and varied world
  • Retirement System - Once characters are sufficiently leveled up, they can “retire” and bestow specific benefits and perks to new characters
  • Pets - Players will choose a pet to accompany them
  • Pets can level up along with the player, and will help in battle, carry items, and perform a variety of helpful services. Character Classes - Players will create and customize a character from one of three classes available, and choose an animal companion
  • Through cosmetic choices, skill path decisions, and the treasures they acquire, each character will be custom-tailored and different
  • Fishing - Players can take a break from the high-energy pace of adventuring to visit one of the fishing holes and relax and see what they can catch
  • Fish have interesting benefits for the player and pet, and other rewards can also be discovered

5.0 out of 5 stars DIABLO III: THE PG VERSION, 9 April 2010

This review is from: Torchlight (PC) (Video Game)
This game sure comes with some serious pedigree: Travis Baldree, designer of Fate, and Max Schaefer and Erich Schaefer, co-designers of Diablo I & II put their heads together and came up with an action hack&slash isometric RPG game that can appeal to all ages. The result is a good game that will keep us hacking and summoning - until the ...3rd coming that is.

In fact, the game developers made sure to often pay tribute to the DIABLO Series: from the background music while at the town-camp (you would recognize those Tristam guitar riffs anywhere!), to the draining health and mana fountains and to the voice announcing & warning, you cannot miss the timeless DIABLO... 5.0 out of 5 stars Great Diablo Clone, 29 Dec 2010
    = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Torchlight (PC) (Video Game)
This is a fun Diablo game clone with nice cartoon-like graphics that is very easy to learn and play. You get to choose from one of three classes each with their own ability trees. Then it's time to explore one dungeon after the next going ever deeper and deeper. There's side quests and mini-dungeons that you can explore for more treasure and gold. All in all a terrific game, I'm hooked.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun Diablo clone, 15 Dec 2010
    = Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Torchlight (PC) (Video Game)
Torchlight is Diablo 2 with a much improvement combat system but without the atmosphere and story. As a result it becomes a bit of a grindfest later on when you have all your skills and the bare thread story isn't carrying you through the game anymore.

If you're reading this, you must have at least some idea of what to expect, but these are my feelings after ~20 hours of play (only just scratching the surface really).

        The good:
Beautiful - Even on my 4-year old Quad core XP PC with a Nvidia 8800GT, the game still looks pretty damn good, and plays well enough to not notice any serious framerate issues. Quality settings are mostly medium (although the autodetect wanted to set low)
Immersive - Skyrim feels much more of a functioning world than Oblivion or Morrowind. There are plenty of background incidents going on all over town (and out in the country). I've even seen a pack of wolves chasing a deer that I had startled.
Music - Perfect. Background music that doesn't annoy, but subtly warns of impending danger.
Crafting - Nicely done. The opportunity to mine several different ores, smelt them into even more varieties of metal; and then turn them into armour and weapons. You can improve existing gear... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Single-player RPGs are not dead., 7 Dec 2011

In a time when even giants of single-player RPGs like Bioware try to cash in on the MMO market, it's nice to see Bethesda stick to their guns. And right they were, because Skyrim turns out to be a fantastic game. If you have played previous Bethesda titles such as Morrowind, Oblivion or Fallout 3, you will know what to expect and need read no further. Skyrim is as good if not better than those games, so if you liked them, make sure to pick up Skyrim as well.

For those readers who have not experienced those games however, some introduction may be in order. The game setting is a world called Tamriel, populated by different human races, elves and orcs as well as the humanoid cats named Khajit and the reptilian Argonians. But wait, don't take this to mean that the world is generic fantasy to the point of being boring, because it's not. I could not hope to give even a summary of the extremely detailed history of Tamriel, but in-game books will keep you occupied for hours on the... Read more

Yes it has a "but" so you're probably wondering why 5 stars. Simply because this game deserves to be rated more than 5 stars, around 6 because it transcends gaming as we know it in its scope and pushes the boundaries out of what is possible in gaming. So it deserves more than 5 stars because it's in a class of its own..but it's still not perfect. Here's why:

        1) The AI (artificial intelligence). It has not improved much in the last ten years and this game is no different. The graphics are very very good and cinematic, the special effects also. But the AI is not that different from Morrowind released almost ten years ago. The characters in the game have a tough time tracking you (they get stuck a lot), they are repetitive in what they say and I would say in that respect they feel less life like than the previous Elder Scroll games.

        2) Sameness. Look at the trailer and you think you're getting an epic game along the lines of Conan and Beowulf and you'll be on your... Read more
