So here it is: The long-awaited expansion to Civilization 5 and I can't say I'm impressed. There was plenty that went wrong with the original that could have been put right, but unfortunately this hasn't happened.

Upon playing, you may be a little confused by the title "Gods and Kings", because although religion has been reintroduced into the game, there doesn't seem to have anything added in the realm of empire governance and the only other major feature to have been added is espionage. The failure to mention "spies" in the title is somewhat appropriate, as they're almost completely useless (more about *that* later).

The religion in Civilization is probably the most significant addition and it works as follows: You build various temples and wonders in your cities to generate "faith" points. Once you've got enough of those, you can add new traits to your pantheon, enhance your existing religion, or purchase a great prophet and found a new religion. Normally, the... Read more

When Civ 5 first came out I did not much care for it - but gradually they patched it and changed the balance of the game, and it improved - from 5/10 to 8/10.

Civ 4 had a similar expansion pack, Beyond the Sword, that made a good game great, so I had high expectations for this.

So, what of this expansion? I like bits of it, but....

I think religion has too inconsequential. You can only get one religion as far as I can tell, and cannot stop others founding their own. You cannot even limit their options. The things it gives you - some happiness, maybe some cash is nice but not game changing. As it is not exclusive it no longer gives an edge over others as it did in civ 4 - it just adds something everyone has - complexity without benefit.

Espionage is just a pain - I cannot stop them nicking techs and they have nothing I want by the time spies come along, and there are no other missions (sabotage for example) for spies.

Strategy games have few expansions these days and for the longest time it looked like Civilization V expansions will be nothing more than the small extra-Civilization DLC's that have been released over time. But Gods & Kings actually puts up an effort for a game released two years ago.

If you also have the DLC's, then Gods & Kings makes the civilization selection truly epic in scale. But civilization shave always been a little on the shallow side when it comes to differences in gameplay, so Gods & Kings actually implements things in the game that make quite a bit of difference in terms of your strategies. The combat system takes what was good in the original release and enhances it, it feels more like chess now than ever before and I love it. Diplomacy has been much improved as well and the biggest new addition, religion, is handled so graciously that you'd have to step back and wonder why it would be a controversial issue at all.

This is a great expansion for a... Read more
